Famous Sitarist Debu Chaudhuri Returns This Fall
Sitarist Debu Chaudhuri, dean of music at the University of Delhi and a
world-class musician, will be returning to the Maharishi University of
Management (Fairfield, Iowa) for a week this fall to offer both public and
private concerts.
Debu has given stellar--even legendary--performances at the University a
number of times in the past. "Everybody knows Debu," says John
Runkle,
director of the Institute for Maharishi Gandharva Veda Music. "We don't
even
have to advertise. He has that star quality."
President Clinton got to experience that star quality during his recent trip
to India: one of the events he attended was a performance by Debu, who then
had the opportunity to give the president one of his recordings. President
Clinton said he intended to listen to it.
Debu's many honors include the Padma Bhushan, which is the highest award for
music conferred by the government of India.
Mr. Runkle said that all of the sitar music heard on station KHOE and on all
of the Maharishi label recordings is by Debu. "Debu is very dear to
Maharishi and to his worldwide Movement," Mr. Runkle said.
Accompanying Mr. Chaudhuri to the U.S. will be his son Prateek and a tabla
player. There will be a concert on Saturday, September 30, in the evening
and again on Sunday, October 1, at 6:00 a.m. He will also offer a
lecture/demonstration at Maharishi School. Private concerts will be held in
Fairfield and at other locations in the U.S.
